The Prevalence of Hypertension, Hyperlipidemia and Coronary Heart Disease in a Health Screening Center

Abstract
Background: With increasing incidence of cardiovascular diseases and the improvement of life quality, the concerns about health screening are exploring to prevent and detect early cardiovascular diseases of hypertension and coronary artery diseases. To investigate the incidence of hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and coronary artery diseases, we analyzed healthy Korean adults in the health screening center.
Methods: Nine thousand fifty five subjects (4,477 male and 4,578 female) who received a paid health screening examination at Chonnam National University Hospital between January 1997 and December 1998 are studied. We defined hypertension as systolic blood pressure¡Ã90 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure¡Ã140 mmHg, hypercholesterolemia as total cholesterol ¡Ã240 mg/dL, and hypertriglyceridemia as triglyceride¡Ã236 mgldL.
Results: There are 567 (M:F=284:283) between the ages of 20 and 29, 2191 (M:F=1,135:965) between the ages of 30 and 39, 2223 (M:F=1099:1124) between the ages of 40 and 49, 2870 (M:F=1257:1613) at the ages of 50 to 59 and 1306 (M:F=702:604) above the ages of 60. The overall prevalence of hypertension is 34.4% (3111/9055). Among them, electrocardiographic abnormalities are showed in 836 subjects in the prevalence of 26.9%. There are 1707 of patients with hyperlipidemia in the overall prevalence of 18.9% with 858 (9.5%) of subjects with hypercholesterolemia, 1088 (12.0%) of
